There’s no single “best time” to visit Vietnam โ the country spans 15 degrees of latitude with wildly different climates. What’s perfect weather in Hanoi might mean monsoon flooding in Hoi An.
Here’s how to time your trip right.
Quick Answer
All of Vietnam: October-November and March-April offer the best overall conditions
North Vietnam: September-November for pleasant temperatures
Central Vietnam: February-May to avoid both heat and rain
South Vietnam: December-April during dry season
North Vietnam (Hanoi, Sapa, Halong Bay)
Best: September-November, March-May
Mild temperatures, low rainfall, clear skies. Perfect for Halong Bay cruises and Sapa trekking.
Challenging: June-August
Hot, humid, frequent afternoon storms. Still manageable but less comfortable.
Unique: December-February
Genuinely cold (down to 10ยฐC/50ยฐF). Misty, moody, beautiful in its own way. Pack layers.
Central Vietnam (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An)
Best: February-May
Dry, warm but not oppressive. Beach weather at its best.
Avoid: September-November
Peak rainy season. Hoi An regularly floods in October-November. Some years are worse than others.
Summer: June-August
Hot and dry. Great for beaches. Prepare for serious heat (35ยฐC+).
South Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta)
Best: December-April
Dry season. Hot but manageable humidity. Best time for the Mekong.
Wet: May-November
Daily afternoon downpours, usually clearing by evening. Still very visitable โ just plan around the rain.
Month-by-Month
January-February
Dry season south, cold north, pleasant central. Tet holiday (dates vary) โ book ahead, some closures.
March-April
Excellent nationwide. Warming up everywhere.
May
Heating up. Rainy season begins in south. Still good for central.
June-August
Peak summer. Hot everywhere. Good for central beaches. Afternoon storms north and south.
September
Transition month. Central rainy season begins. North still pleasant.
October-November
Best for north. Worst for central (flooding). Shoulder season south.
December
Cold north. Perfect south. Central drying out.

- Sapa Rice Harvest: Late September-October. Golden terraces at their most photogenic.
Crowd Considerations
- Peak season: December-February (Western holidays + good weather)
- Shoulder: March-May, September-November
- Low season: June-August (school’s out though, so family travelers)
