For years, Da Nang was just a layover between Hue and Hoi An. Big mistake. Vietnam’s third-largest city has quietly become one of Southeast Asia’s most pleasant urban destinations โ clean, modern, affordable, with a beach that rivals anywhere in the region.
Why Da Nang?
Think of it as Vietnam’s Goldilocks city. Not as chaotic as Saigon, not as traditional as Hanoi. The infrastructure is modern, the beach is accessible, the food is excellent, and it’s perfectly positioned for exploring central Vietnam.
Plus, it’s where Vietnamese people actually vacation. That tells you something.
Beaches
My Khe Beach
The main event. Four kilometers of white sand stretching right in front of the city. Ranked among Asia’s best beaches, and unlike many beach towns, the water is actually clean.
Early morning sees locals exercising. Afternoons belong to surfers (yes, there are waves). Sunsets are spectacular.
Non Nuoc Beach
Quieter option south of the city, near the Marble Mountains. Resort-heavy but less crowded.
Major Attractions
Dragon Bridge
Yes, it’s a bridge shaped like a dragon. At 9pm on weekends, the dragon breathes fire and water. Kitschy? Absolutely. Worth seeing? Also absolutely.
Marble Mountains
Five limestone hills, each named after an element. Caves, pagodas, incredible views. Allow half a day. Take the elevator up, walk down through the caves.
Ba Na Hills
The theme park in the clouds. Famous for the Golden Bridge (giant stone hands holding a golden walkway). Touristy and crowded, but the views are undeniably stunning. The cable car ride alone is worth it.
Son Tra Peninsula (Monkey Mountain)
Rent a motorbike and explore this peninsula north of the city. Lady Buddha statue, wild monkeys, hidden beaches, panoramic views. Best at sunrise or sunset.
Food Scene
Central Vietnamese cuisine is distinct โ more chili, more fermented flavors, smaller portions meant for sharing.
Local Specialties
- Mi Quang: Turmeric noodles with pork, shrimp, herbs, peanuts. The defining Da Nang dish.
- Banh Xeo: Crispy rice pancakes. Central Vietnam version is smaller, crispier.
- Bun Cha Ca: Fish cake noodle soup. Breakfast of champions.
- Seafood: Fresh from the boats. My Khe beach has excellent seafood restaurants.
Where to Eat
- Con Market (Cho Con): Local market with food stalls. Authentic and cheap.
- Han Market: More touristy but good selection.
- Bach Dang riverside: Evening food stalls, great atmosphere.
Day Trips
- Hoi An: Only 30 minutes south. Ancient town, tailor shops, lantern-lit streets. Could be a day trip but deserves overnight.
- Hue: 2 hours north. Imperial citadel, royal tombs. Vietnam’s old capital.
- Hai Van Pass: The famous mountain pass from Top Gear. Best by motorbike.
Practical Information
- Best time: February to May. Summer is hot but still pleasant. September-November gets heavy rain.
- Airport: Da Nang International โ very close to city center (15-20 minutes).
- Getting around: Grab, or rent a motorbike (city is easy to navigate).
- How long: 2-3 days for the city, longer if combining with Hoi An and Hue.
Accommodation Tip
Stay near My Khe beach rather than in the city center. You get the beach, plus easy access to everything else. Modern hotels are surprisingly affordable โ expect to pay $40-80 for an excellent beachfront room.
