After helping thousands of travelers with their Vietnam visas, I’ve heard every story imaginable. The good news? Most problems are completely avoidable. Here are the mistakes I see tourists make over and over โ and how to sidestep them.
Mistake #1: Leaving Visa to the Last Minute
This is the big one. I get panicked emails every week from travelers who assumed they could sort their visa at the airport. Some nationalities can, most can’t.
The fix: Apply for your e-visa at least one week before departure. Yes, urgent processing exists, but why stress yourself? The application takes 15 minutes.
Mistake #2: Only Carrying Large Bills
You land in Vietnam with crisp $100 bills because that’s what the currency exchange gave you. Problem is, nobody wants to break them. Street vendors, taxi drivers, even some restaurants will turn you away.
The fix: Get a mix of small bills before you arrive, or use ATMs in Vietnam for local currency. Vietnamese dong looks like Monopoly money at first, but you’ll adjust.
Mistake #3: Booking the Cheapest Tour
That $15 Halong Bay “cruise” seemed like a steal, right? Until you’re packed onto a rusty boat with 50 other tourists, eating mystery meat for lunch.
The fix: Read recent reviews, not just star ratings. Spend a bit more for reputable operators. The difference between a $40 tour and $80 tour is massive.
Mistake #4: Trusting Random Taxi Drivers
The guy at the airport who approaches you directly? He’s not your friend. His meter is “broken” and your ride to the hotel will cost three times the normal rate.
The fix: Use Grab (Vietnam’s version of Uber) or book airport transfer in advance. If you must use a taxi, stick to Vinasun (white) or Mai Linh (green).
Mistake #5: Trying to See Everything
Vietnam is bigger than it looks on a map. Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City is 1,700 kilometers. Trying to see both, plus Hoi An, plus Sapa, in one week? You’ll spend more time traveling than actually experiencing anything.
The fix: Pick a region and explore it properly. North or South for a week. Save the other half for your next trip โ because there will be a next trip.
Mistake #6: Not Negotiating
If there’s no price tag, the price isn’t fixed. That applies to markets, taxi rides (non-metered), and many services. Paying the first price quoted makes you a walking ATM.
The fix: Smile, negotiate gently, be willing to walk away. Start at 50% of asking price and meet somewhere in the middle. It’s expected and often part of the fun.
Mistake #7: Forgetting Travel Insurance
Vietnam’s traffic is… intense. Motorbikes are everywhere. Even if you’re careful, things happen. Hospital bills without insurance can wipe out your savings.
The fix: Get travel insurance before you leave. Make sure it covers motorbike accidents (many policies don’t unless you have a license). It’s $30-50 for a trip โ worth every penny.
The Bottom Line
Vietnam is one of the most rewarding countries to visit in Southeast Asia. The food is incredible, the scenery is jaw-dropping, and the people are genuinely welcoming. Just do a little homework beforehand, keep your wits about you, and you’ll have the trip of a lifetime.
