And how you can avoid the same costly errors

Last month, I was preparing for what should have been a smooth trip to Vietnam. I’d booked my flights, reserved hotels in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and was excited to explore the country’s incredible food scene.

Then I made a simple mistake that almost ruined everything.

The $200 Mistake

When filling out my Vietnam e-Visa application, I accidentally typed my passport number wrong. Just one digit. I didn’t notice until I was at the airport check-in counter and the airline staff pointed out the discrepancy.

My heart sank.

What I Learned

After a frantic hour of calls and online research, here’s what I discovered about fixing Vietnam visa mistakes:

If You Catch It Before Travel

Option 1: Apply for a new visa

  • Submit a fresh application with correct details
  • Pay the fee again (yes, it hurts)
  • Processing takes 1-3 business days

Option 2: Use urgent processing services

  • Many visa services offer same-day corrections
  • Costs more but saves your trip
  • Some services have 24/7 support

If You’re Already at the Airport

  • Contact the visa service immediately
  • Some can issue corrected letters within hours
  • Vietnam immigration occasionally allows minor corrections at the border (but don’t count on this)

The 5 Most Common Vietnam Visa Mistakes

After talking to other travelers and visa agents, I compiled this list:

1. Passport Number Errors

The most common mistake. Always triple-check this!

2. Name Spelling Differences

Your visa must match your passport EXACTLY. If your passport says “SMITH, JOHN DAVID” don’t write “John D. Smith”

3. Wrong Entry/Exit Dates

If you change your travel dates after applying, you need a new visa

4. Expired Passport

Your passport must be valid for 6+ months from entry date

5. Wrong Entry Point

If you list SGN (Ho Chi Minh) but arrive at HAN (Hanoi), you could have problems

How to Avoid My Mistake

Here’s my new pre-submission checklist:

1. Have someone else review – Fresh eyes catch errors 2. Compare letter-by-letter – Hold your passport next to the screen 3. Screenshot everything – Save your confirmation details 4. Apply early – Give yourself time to fix problems 5. Use a reliable service – Good services double-check your application

The Silver Lining

After paying for rush processing, I did make my flight — barely. The experience taught me to be more careful and always have a backup plan when traveling internationally.

Vietnam was absolutely worth the stress. The street food in Hanoi alone made up for everything!

Don’t Make My Mistake

If you’re applying for a Vietnam visa, take your time and double-check everything. Or better yet, use a service that reviews your application before submission.
