Vietnam is generally safe for travelers, but a little preparation goes a long way. Here’s what you need to know to stay healthy during your trip.
Before You Go
Vaccinations
Consult your doctor 4-6 weeks before travel. Common recommendations:
- Routine vaccines: Ensure tetanus, measles, etc. are current
- Hepatitis A: Recommended for all travelers
- Typhoid: Especially if eating street food
- Hepatitis B: If you might have medical procedures
- Rabies: Consider if spending time in rural areas
- Japanese Encephalitis: For extended stays or rural travel
Malaria
Risk is low in tourist areas (Hanoi, HCMC, coastal cities). Higher in rural, forested border regions. Discuss with your doctor if you’re trekking remote areas.
Travel Insurance
Absolutely essential. Make sure it covers:
- Medical evacuation
- Emergency treatment
- Motorbike accidents (check policy carefully)
Common Health Issues
Traveler’s Diarrhea
The most common problem. Prevention:
- Drink only bottled/boiled water
- Avoid ice in sketchy places
- Eat freshly cooked, hot food
- Peel fruits yourself
Treatment: Stay hydrated (Oresol packets), rest, bland food. Most cases resolve in 24-48 hours.
Heat-Related Illness
- Drink lots of water
- Wear sunscreen (stronger UV than you’re used to)
- Take breaks in air conditioning
- Watch for signs of heat exhaustion
Mosquito-Borne Disease
Dengue fever is the main concern in Vietnam (especially rainy season). Prevention:
- Use DEET-based repellent
- Wear long sleeves/pants at dawn and dusk
- Sleep with AC or under a mosquito net
Medical Facilities
Major Cities
Hanoi and HCMC have international-standard hospitals:
- Hanoi: Vinmec, Family Medical Practice
- HCMC: FV Hospital, Columbia Asia
Pharmacies
Everywhere and well-stocked. Pharmacists can recommend medications for common problems. Many drugs available without prescription (use judgment).
In Case of Emergency
- Emergency number: 115 (ambulance)
- Police: 113
- Fire: 114
- Most hospitals have English-speaking staff in tourist areas
Safety Concerns

This is the biggest danger in Vietnam. Traffic rules are suggestions. Always:
- Look both ways, multiple times
- Cross slowly and predictably
- Don’t make sudden movements
- Assume motorbikes will appear from anywhere
Petty Crime

- Don’t flash expensive electronics
- Use hotel safes for valuables

- Overly friendly strangers โ usually selling something
