Short answer: the e-visa works at a land border. Visa on arrival does not. Visa on arrival is an airport instrument — it needs an approval letter arranged in advance, and even with that letter in hand it is not accepted at a road crossing from Cambodia, Laos or China. Overland, the e-visa is the route: up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, USD 25 or USD 50 on the government portal, valid at all of Vietnam’s official ports of entry — air, land and sea.

It is the cleanest difference between the two, and the one that strands people, because a bus company does not check paperwork the way an airline does. Full comparison: e-visa versus visa on arrival.

Why visa on arrival fails at a land gate

The name is the problem. It sounds like the Turkish or Egyptian model — land, pay a desk, walk through. Vietnam’s version has two conditions, and the second ends the conversation at a border:

  • You must have an approval letter obtained in advance. Without it there is nothing to present.
  • It is valid only at international airports — never at a land border, never at a seaport.

The letter is not a visa. It authorises an airport counter to issue one, against a cash stamping fee after a queue. At Moc Bai or Lao Bao there is no such counter, so someone who bought a letter and rode a bus to the border is holding a document the officer has no procedure for.

What the e-visa gives you overland

  • Up to 90 days, single or multiple entry — chosen when you apply, not changeable afterwards
  • USD 25 single entry, USD 50 multiple entry, paid on the official portal
  • Valid at every official port of entry — air, land and sea
  • Non-refundable if refused. The fee buys a decision, not an outcome
  • 3 working days as standard — carry it printed; at a land crossing no counter can look you up

The entry point you name on the application

The application asks where you intend to enter Vietnam. Put your actual route down: riding the Phnom Penh bus, name the gate that bus uses, not “Ho Chi Minh City airport” because it was the first familiar option.

Whether that named point is strictly binding at the border is not something we will answer with a guess — the rules around the field have moved more than once, so check it on evisa.gov.vn before booking the crossing. Naming the gate you actually plan to use costs nothing either way.

A bus company is not an airline

An airline checks your visa at check-in, and a wrong answer there costs you a boarding pass rather than a border crossing. Irritating, and also a safety net: the problem surfaces in the departure city, at a desk, hours before you fly.

Overland, almost nobody performs it. The first person to examine your visa is the officer at the gate — and if something is wrong there, you are at a road crossing with no consular desk, no agency office, a bus that leaves without you and often no usable data signal. The failure mode is not worse paperwork. It is a worse place to find it.

Before you rely on any of these: e-visa validity is specified gate by gate, and the official list changes. These are the main crossings, not a statement that each one accepts an e-visa today. Check the current border-gate list on evisa.gov.vn against the exact gate on your route before you book a bus — a crossing is a bad place to discover the answer.

A starting point, not a complete list: the port list has been expanded and revised more than once, gates change status and hours vary, so confirm yours before committing. The Chinese border also raises a question your Vietnamese visa says nothing about — leaving China by road has its own rules on the Chinese side.

Leaving Vietnam overland

Same passport, same logic. Exit is checked against the visa that got you in, so what matters is the validity window printed on it, not how long you feel you have been here. Count the date, not the days. If the window is closing and no border is near, an extension is the other lever — not guaranteed, and started before expiry rather than after: emergency extension.

Cambodia and back: single entry is single entry

This catches people who plan Vietnam with a few days in Cambodia or Laos in the middle. A single-entry e-visa is consumed by the first crossing; the trip back is a second entry, and single entry does not cover it.

Multiple entry costs USD 50 instead of USD 25, chosen at application and fixed from that moment. There is no upgrading mid-trip; the fallback is a fresh application at 3 working days, from a guesthouse in Kampot. Twenty-five dollars decided in advance is the whole fix.

Do you need a visa at all?

Vietnam exempts 24 nationalities for 45 days under resolutions 44/NQ-CP (7 March 2025, in force until 14 March 2028) and 229 (15 August 2025, until 14 August 2028). The exemption follows the passport, not the airport you left from. Nine EU states are not on it — Austria, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta and Portugal — while outside the EU the UK, Norway, Switzerland, Russia, Japan and South Korea are. Extending the 45 days from inside the country takes a Vietnamese sponsor, and for the twelve countries under 229 the exemption covers tourism only. If you are on one of the nine, see which EU citizens need a Vietnam visa, or for Irish passports urgent Vietnam visa for Irish citizens.

Timing, and the thing nobody can sell you

The government does not sell speed. There is no express fee on the portal and no priority queue, and a service claiming an official fast track is describing something that does not exist — the most reliable way to spot a dishonest intermediary. What an agency does is narrower and real: check the application before it is filed, submit it inside Hanoi working hours, and file at a weekend when the portal cannot. Standard processing is 3 working days; agency tiers run 48 hours, 24 hours, 4 hours or 1 hour.

Overland travel makes this sharper. You are usually days from a city with a consulate when the problem appears, and Vietnamese working hours are what the clock actually runs on — weekends and public holidays stop it, Tết for about a week.

The digital arrival card

Since 15 April 2026 a digital arrival card has applied at Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City, where it is recommended rather than mandatory, and it may extend to other airports at short notice. It is not a visa and does not replace one, and we have not seen it stated as a land-border requirement — so we will not say it is. Source: gov.uk Vietnam travel advice, checked 6 September 2026.

What actually gets applications rejected

The photo, more than every other cause combined: plain white background, no glasses, no head covering, ears visible, face square to the camera. The notice does not say which rule you broke — see photo rejected. The names, matching the passport data page exactly, order included. The payment: a failed one means no application exists, so the clock never started and nobody tells you (payment failed). The passport: six months of validity from arrival, two blank pages.

There is no appeal — a rejection is answered with a fresh application and a second fee, so find the cause first: rejected and reapplying. A status stuck on processing, meanwhile, is not by itself a rejection signal — there is no partial-approval tier — though one running well past the normal window is worth chasing: still processing.

The short version

  • E-visa: valid at land borders. Visa on arrival: airports only, letter or no letter
  • Name the crossing you will actually use, and check on the portal whether it binds you
  • Nobody checks your visa before the border, so the border is where problems surface
  • Leaving and returning needs multiple entry — USD 50, chosen at application, fixed then
  • Three weeks out, do it yourself; no government express lane exists for anyone to sell
